"The Last August." In this story, the writer tells about his childhood, like the childhood of millions of his peers, having spent in ramshackle pre-war huts where working families were resided. There was a contrast between toilets in the courtyards and the neighboring gardens, where it was fun for the children to steal sour apples. But there is something different about the child--the main character: a slow, gradual realization that he is unique, different from all his peers. The collection also includes novellas: "New York Gulls" and "Focus of Salieri". The stories of Peter Nemirovsky are written in such a manner that the reader has a feeling that he is in a cinema where he watches cool American movies.
